Finding A Suitable Replacement Turntable Stylus

By Betty Rogers

A large number of people have vinyl record collections and will use a record deck to play them on. CD's and digital downloads are much more common these days and locating spares for record players can be difficult if you do not know where to look. If you are searching for a replacement turntable stylus there are various options available to you after a little research.

The cartridge or stylus is a very important part of your record player as it transfers sound from the disc to the speakers. If your needle had been damaged or is well used, it will give poor sound reproduction and can damage your records. Thousands of different styluses are offered for sale and it is imperative that you source and fit one that will be compatible with your stereo equipment.

A good starting point when buying audio equipment and spares is a specialist store in your neighborhood. Most of the outlets will have a stock of parts for decks in production and in some cases out of date turntables. If they can not supply you with a match they can usually order one from a manufacturer and they will notify you when it has arrived.

Another good place to locate a suitable replacement is on the net and there are a lot of suppliers who trade online. You need to find the serial number of your stylus and then browse their lists to find a good match. If you are unable to find a serial number, you can send in a detailed photo and they may be able to supply you with one from this information.

When a high street dealer or a web based retailer can not help you it is a good idea to try one of the online auction pages. Many of these web sites will have pages of needles listed that you are able to bid on and you can often secure a bargain. When you are unsure about the needle or cartridge you are bidding on it is advisable to contact the seller.

Another useful place to visit is a second hand store where you may find old decks that are no longer made. A lot of junk stores will have obsolete and old audio gear in stock at bargain prices. If you are lucky and you manage to find a match for your needle, it is a very good idea to buy the complete record player in case you need other hard to find spares.

It is always better to use manufacturer parts when replacing items of audio equipment. If the manufacturer of your record deck is still trading you should purchase directly from them. If they are not able to supply you with a stylus, they will advise you where you can look and this will assist you in your search.

After you have found a suitable needle it is an idea to get a couple to keep for the future. If you have had trouble in finding a needle, buying extra ones will save some time when you need another replacement. Always keep a stylus in its box or fitted to your turntable to prevent any accidental damage.
