How To Prepare For DOT Health Card Tests

By Kimberly Hall

It is recommended that before taking a test, one should familiarize with the necessities and what to expect. Commercial drivers handle heavy merchandise thus there is need to make sure they do not put other road users at risk in case of an accident. This is because these heavy trucks are responsible for causing fatal accidents. Before booking an appointment for DOT health card examination, there are some things a driver should be aware of as outlined below.

One should be aware that the drug test is an important part of the physicals. The test is normally strict and it is easy for one to obtain a negative result even when they have little traces of drugs in their systems. For example the test will test positive for marijuana taken 30 days ago. Mostly the test is taken in order to check for the presence of 5 major drugs within the system. The urinalysis will test the presence marijuana, PCP, cocaine, heroin and amphetamines in the body.

Commercial trucks drivers can also be disqualified if they are diagnosed with diseases such as kidney failures and diabetes. However, these diseases can only be tested by carrying out a urinalysis. They will take a sample of the urine from the driver and test for any sugars or glucose present. The presence of glucose levels that escalates is normally an early indication of a diabetes disorder. Thus the urinalysis examination is not only meant for a drug tests only.

There is need to research on the actual duration the document is valid to avoid getting into trouble. Basically, a normal healthy driver will be issued a certificate that remains valid for 24 months. However, the health condition of an individual has a great impact on the actual duration before expiry. For instance, people who are under medication for high blood pressure will only be issued a certificate that is valid for 12 months only before the test.

Drivers should be aware of all the regulations set aside by the relevant authorities regarding people who suffer from high blood pressure. Such people are not expected to receive the same amount of time before they go back for the repeat of such tests. Some drivers will receive up to 3 months of duration before the repeat while others will take a year. Therefore the period varies depending on the measurements of their levels and are required to keep it under control.

Another important thing that any driver should be aware of is the conditions that might lead to the disqualification from passing the tests. Apart from the uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure, one might get disqualified due to poor vision or mental disorder. Alcoholism or drug addiction is one the things that can also lead to the disqualifications.

One thing that any driver should not forget is a list of all the things they are required to produce before the test. For instance, they will carry any aids they have been using for their vision or hearing.

Having carried all the requirements, the process for the examination is simplified. The professional will only have to go through the documents before the assessments. Thus one should make early preparations and select the best expert.
