Understanding A Freelance Television Writer Los Angeles

By Sharon Sullivan

While there are many individuals working as a consultant or on a contract basis in Hollywood, it can often be difficult to find and maintain work. Whereas, those willing to work in different areas of the industry often have the best luck. One way newcomers can become involved in this type of career is by working as a freelance television writer Los Angeles.

While most individuals desiring to write for television want to do so as soon as landing in Los Angeles, it can often be quite some time before one can do so. For, while being a freelancer has a number of benefits, there can also be drawbacks. In fact, most often an individual must work in a number of different areas before becoming active in script and screenwriting.

The earlier an individual realizes that there is a desire in a writing career, the better. For, those whom have gone through a theater arts program and have acquired a degree are often in high demand. Whereas, those whom have written and developed scripts and screenplays as part of the process are often the first to get jobs in the industry.

When going through such a program, individuals learn the difference between writing styles across genres. In addition, by knowing the art of how to sell scripts and being able to analyze writing styles, one can often go further in the industry. While this is the case, even the most experienced often have to complete an internship before being placed on a writing team.

When looking to work in this area, it is also important that individuals have a strong backbone. For, it can often be difficult working with other writers, actors and directors. In most cases, the actors have the last word as to whether or not specific writing makes it on to the screen. As such, writers must understand when an actor changes a script whether prior to or while filming a scene.

One of the most difficult yet easy to enter genres related to film and television is that of Horror. For, when it comes to writing, or acting in this genre, it takes someone who can be creative and write material that is both intelligent and horrifying. A good example of this type writing would range from The Blair Witch Project to The Exorcist.

While horror is one of the most difficult aspects of writing for television, it can also be a great deal of fun. In most cases, television series focus on monsters, zombies and vampires. As such, it can often be beneficial to watch a number of these type shows when hoping to write within this particular genre.

Individuals working in the film and television industry also need to have some business experience. For, while the business side of this work is often handled by others, there can be times when a writer might be called to assist on a business project. As such, it is also important that individuals have an understanding of the business practice side of things when it comes to working in this area.
