Some Jamaican Charities Are Doing A Great Job

By Gary Green

Charity work has transformed billions of lives all over the world. In Africa, many lives have been touched by charity. In Jamaica, some Jamaican charities are doing a good job. In a world that is full of suffering and hopelessness, it is always good to extend the hand of charity and help those who are in need. People should not turn a blind eye to all the suffering that is taking place in the developing world. In some places, life is a pain to live. People are barely surviving in the slums of Jamaica.

Poverty is a scar in the conscience of Jamaica and the world in general. It is the greatest irony that the world has an abundance of gold and silver yet there are people who are surviving on less than a dollar a day. Some developing nations even have mineral wealth but more than half of the population is living in poverty.

Poverty has solutions and some charity organizations are already implementing such solutions in Jamaica. First, there is the need to deal with the poverty mindset. Sometimes, poverty is a mindset thing. Secondly, people need to be financial empowered. There are institutions that are providing micro-finance loans to underprivileged individuals in the third world. With a loan, one can start a thriving business.

There is also the problem of water. Not everyone in Jamaica has access to clean drinking water. That has led to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. One can easily find charity organizations that are involved in digging boreholes in different cities of Jamaica. Empowering people with water is something amazing. As it is commonly said, water is life.

Water is the most basic human need. The others are food, shelter and clothing. According to leading scientists of Ivy League institutions, one can survive for only a few days without water. On the other hand, one can leave for a number of weeks without food. In some parts of the world there is hunger and malnutrition.

Some charities are in the business of eliminating hunger. They deal with distributing food to drought stricken areas. There are many causes of drought. The major cause of drought is deforestation. If people continue cutting trees at the current rate, there will be little or no rain in the future. Some charities empower people about the dangers of destructive habits like deforestation.

Most of the problems of developing countries can be solved if people in those countries get a high quality education. In some countries, the level of illiteracy is very high. It is disheartening that in the modern day world, there are still people who cannot read and write. Some non-governmental organizations are building schools and supplying books.

It is good to be a helpful individual. Those who help other people will one day be helped. In life, circumstances usually change. The helper can become the helped. That is the irony of life. One can help in cash or in kind. One can volunteer his skills to help people in need. Alternatively, one can make a cash donation to a reputable charity.
