What You Need To Know About Roll On Trailer Jack

By Michelle Thompson

Small boats and yachts can be trailed down the road and parked at home garages. Families will pull that out when summer and fishing seasons come. This tells us that recreational vehicles are not the only ones that need trailer jacks. Boats need roll on trailer jack as well for easy driving.

The function of these devices is simple. The wheels are there for pivot allowance. Meanwhile, the handle will raise the boat up and lower it down. You can also attach and detach it from the hitch. Usage of this will also allow it level up and stabilize it when on the move and at rest.

Ensuring the trailer jack that is best for you, you have to consider the water environment that it will sail into. Note that fresh water needs a device that can handle the environment with less corrosion by being powder coated. When sailing in salt water requires components of aluminum in the device or even zincs coating. Remember to lubricate it with grease regularly in order to last longer.

Taking this factor into consideration will ensure that the coatings will not be completely removed. Take for instance the zinc that has been exposed to salt water for more than a hundred hours. That duration will clear the coating off from the trailer jacks rendering it useless next time. Hence, it is also important that you buy one with UV and corrosion resistance.

Second, you should consider the height of the trailer boat. Measure it so you will know the ideal height off the ground to ensure leveling. The measurement is your basis for the length of your device. Also, consider the usage of ball mounts in order to raise it up and drop it down to ideal heights.

To add, measuring the travel distance you have to cover is important. It will ensure that you have the correct extension size that fits your travel needs. Ideally, closer locations may use smaller jacks. On the other hand, long distance locations may need heavy duty jacks.

Next is to ensure that it fits the tongue of the trailer boat. More importantly, its tongue weight needs to be measured. To do so, you can place it on a household scale if it weighs a maximum of three hundred pounds. If it is heavier, place a brick on the side that is spaced apart from the scale by three feet. It is because it needs to ensure that imbalance and swaying does not occur.

Another is to choose if you want single wheel or double wheels. The former is ideal if the road is made of gravel, concrete, and asphalt covered pavements. Meanwhile, the latter are more on hard surfaces. Though this makes it hard to maneuver, it does make more contact with the ground.

At times, you might get confused as to what type of trailer jacks is best for the boat. When you do, do not hesitate to ask for help from friends and professionals for they know how this things work. They will recommend things so you can form the best decision. In effect, towing the trailer will be smooth in the future.
