Looking For A Replacement Turntable Stylus

By Timothy Thompson

A large number of music lovers will have a collection of records and will use a turntable to play music on. With modern technology, digital music players are now very popular and so it can often be hard to find spare needles for a record deck. When you need to fit a replacement turntable stylus there are a few options available to you and it is important that you find the correct one.

A good quality needle is a very important part of you record player as it picks up the sound from the tiny grooves in the record and turns it into the sound. A worn needle will not give you a quality sound and it can also cause a lot of damage to your vinyl records. There are many types of needle and it is essential that you fit one that is compatible to your equipment.

The best place to find what you are searching for is an audio dealer in your neighborhood. Many of the outlets will have a stock of cartridges and single needles for currently made turntables and some older or obsolete models. If they are unable to find you a compatible stylus they will often order one from a manufacturer and you can collect it or have it mailed to you.

Buying from an internet retailer is also a good choice and there are established suppliers who trade online. When you are ordering, you will need a manufacturers name or a parts number to search through the listings. If the technical information is not available, some of the sites will find you a needle if you send in a good quality picture of your stylus.

Web auction sites can often produce results and you will find many needles and cartridges listed. The listings will feature a color photo to allow you to make compare the items offered with your needle. If you are buying a stylus online, it is a good idea to speak with the seller before you bid on the item to make sure it is the correct type.

A useful place to locate hard to source items is in a junk store or charity shop. Many of theses stores will have turntables tucked away and they may have what you have been searching for. If you locate a suitable needle it can be worth buying the turntable as well to use for spares.

When you replace parts of a turntable it is advisable to try and use genuine factory made parts when possible. If the maker of your equipment is still in business, it can be worth contacting them to source your replacement needle or cartridge. If they can not supply you with one, they can often advise you of where you should continue your search by recommending one of their authorized retailers who they supply.

When you have located a needle, it is useful to buy a couple if you can for the future. If you have had some difficulty in finding your item, buying an extra one will save you a lot of time when you need to replace it again. When you are not fitting the new stylus immediately, it should be kept safe to avoid damaging it.
