Advertising is a kind of marketing communication used for promoting or selling products or services of a company. There are many reasons why companies engage in advertising of their businesses. Some companies in engage in this activity for one reason while other do so for multiple reasons. Historical evidence extracted from remains of many ancient civilizations shows that advertising has a very long history. Egyptians used papyrus in making wall posters and sales messages whereas in Ancient Arabia, Pompeii ruins contained evidence of political campaign displays as well texts used for commercial purposes. People from Ancient Greek and Rome also routinely engaged in lost and found advertisement. Wall paintings as well as rock paintings from ancient world are a strong indication of the long history of advertisin.

Rock and wall paintings for commercial advertising have been identified in many regions of all the continents. Wall painting has been determined to have originated from Indian rock art paintings, which are as old as the 4000 BC. Evidence from Classic of Poetry show that ancient China used oral techniques in advertising. Bamboo flutes were played when selling candy to attract people.

Shareholders and employees of a company are also reassured that the business is still viable and successful through advertisement. The level of consumption of a product is increased through branding in commercial adverts. When branding is done properly, consumers can link certain good qualities with the commodity being advertised. The individual or entity that pays from the content in an advert is referred to as a sponsor. The content shows in many different media outlets.

Some of the media outlets that are commonly used to air advertisements to the public include television, radio, direct mail, text messages, the internet, magazines, and newspapers among other. There are commercial and non-commercial advertisers. Commercial advertisers engage in advertising of consumer products and services with the intention of increasing their profits. They mostly take the form of business entities.

Non-commercial advertisers advertise non-consumer products, and services. Non-commercial advertisers include religious organizations, interest groups, political parties, and governmental agencies. They may employ public service announcement and other free modes of persuasion. The estimated global expenditure on advertising was 592.43 billion US Dollars in 2015. Internationally, four main advertising conglomerates command the industry. These are WPP, Publicis, Interpublic, and Omnicom.

Advertising of services and products can be accomplished in any medium. Examples of media used are cinema, web banners, wall paintings, in-flight advertisements, bathrooms stalls, mobile telephone screens, posters, town criers, skywriting, and billboards among many others. Advertising can be placed in many categories including billboard, mobile billboard, television, radio, press, in-store, coffee cup, informercials, online, sheltered outdoor, street, and domain name advertising.

Regulation in the advertisement industry has always been important as a way of protecting public interests. Restriction of the advertisement of tobacco on television is an example of regulation in the industry. Advertising to children is an area of great contention in the European zone.
